Driving Me T-Nuts
Monday, October 24, 2011
Made good progress last night. Got all the wire ramps and the upper plastic playfield removed. After removing those it was the last of the plastic artwork pieces.
Once you get those big pieces out of the way the work gets a little more tedious. There are lots of metal and plastic posts that must be removed. Some of these hold rubber rings and others just serve as support pieces for the parts I have already removed.
I ran into some problems with the posts that slowed my progress down a lot. Some posts are fastened into the playfield with wood screws. Others have bolts that go through to the under side and held in place with nuts. Then there are the ones that caused me much frustration last night. They fasten to the playfield with a bolt that screws into a t-nut. T-nuts are normally pressed into the underneath of the playfield and use little teeth to stay in place. All the troublesome ones had teeth that had been crushed and never got pressed into the wood. This caused them to just spin when I tried to remove the bolt.
I had 4 of them that slowed me down and I am only done with about a third of the playfield. I had to try and grip them with pliers and prevent them from spinning. Not always an easy thing because they are so thin. You can see what they look like in the picture to the right. This is the first time I have had this kind of issue with t-nuts. Usually they have stripped the wood out of the playfield and just spin. Having the teeth crushed is a different problem.
Day 2 end picture with day 4 end picture. Good progress being made. Lots of dirt and grime on the hands.
At the end of the bolt you can see the crushed t-nut. Next to them, you can see what the t-nut should look like.
